Each year since 1998 there has been an observance of the International Transgender Day of Remembrance. Events are held in cities throughout the world to honor those who have been murdered over the past 12 months simply because they were transgender. On November 20, 2009, the first such observance in a very conservative Orange County was held at The Center OC. It was an amazing event to which I am proud to have been a part. There were 124 transgender people murdered worldwide over the past year, with 16 of those here in the United States. Our event highlighted those 16 special people who can no longer be with us. |
